GEICO

The Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO /ˈɡk/) is an auto insurance company. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway that as of 2007 provided coverage for more than 13 million motor vehicles owned by more than 11 million policy holders. GEICO writes private passenger automobile insurance in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Rather than relying on agents to sell policies, GEICO uses a direct-to-consumer sales model and puts funds saved from not paying agent commissions toward the purchase of television advertising, with several campaigns running simultaneously in national markets. Its mascot is "Martin," a Gold dust day gecko with a Cockney accent, voiced by English comedian and actor, Jake Wood. GEICO is well known in popular culture for its advertising, having made a large number of commercials intended to amuse viewers.
GEICO was founded in 1936 by Leo Goodwin, Sr. and his wife Lillian to provide auto insurance directly to federal government employees and their families.[2] Since 1925, Goodwin had worked for USAA, an insurer which specialized in insuring only military personnel; he decided to start his own company after rising as far as a civilian could go in USAA's military-dominated hierarchy. Based on Goodwin's experience at USAA, GEICO's original business model was predicated on the assumption that federal employees as a group would constitute a less risky and more financially stable pool of insureds, as opposed to the general public. Despite the presence of the word "government" in its name, GEICO has always been a private corporation not affiliated with any government organization.
In 1937, the Goodwins relocated GEICO to Washington, D.C. and reincorporated the company as a D.C. corporation after realizing that their business model would work best in the place with the highest concentration of federal employees.
An important figure in GEICO's history is David Lloyd Kreeger, who became president of the company in 1965 and helped steer it into a major insurance enterprise. In 1948, he formed a group of investors who bought into GEICO right before it went public that year. He became senior vice president and general counsel of the company. Six years after becoming president of GEICO in 1964, he was named chairman and chief executive officer. He retained those titles until he retired in 1975. He continued as chairman of the executive committee until 1979, when he was named honorary chairman.[3]
In 1974, under Kreeger's leadership, GEICO began to insure the general public, after real-time access to computerized driving records became available throughout the United States, and it was briefly the fifth-largest U.S. auto insurer. By 1975, it was clear that GEICO had expanded far too rapidly (during the 1973–75 recession) when it reported a $126.5 million loss. To prevent GEICO from collapsing, a consortium of 45 insurance companies agreed to take over a quarter of its policies, and it was forced to issue a stock offering (thus diluting existing stockholders) to raise money to pay claims. It took five years (during which the company shrank significantly) and a massive reorganization to set GEICO on the path to recovery.
GEICO has also offered other types of insurance besides auto: homeowner's insurance from 1962 to 1996, a sister company, the Government Employees Life Insurance Company (GELICO), offered life insurance from 1975 to 1985. Although GEICO has since focused on its core auto insurance competency (selling GELICO to Legal & General), it uses its established direct sales infrastructure to market homeowner's and other types of insurance underwritten by other companies.
In 1996, after many years as a publicly traded firm, GEICO became a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.
GEICO generally deals directly with consumers via telephone and internet through its own insurance agency, the GEICO Insurance Agency, thus freeing up capital that would otherwise be spent on employing insurance agents in the field, but it does have offices across the country for those consumers who prefer to deal with an agent. It is now the third largest direct writer of private auto insurance in the United States.

With umbrella coverage you can choose up to $5 million in added liability protection.
Choose Progressive Personal Umbrella coverage for:

How Personal Umbrella Coverage Protects You

Consider this scenario: You're sued for $1 million after an auto accident or an incident on your home or property. But your insurance only covers up to $500,000 in damages. Who's responsible for the other $500,000 if you're ordered to pay it? You are — unless you have Personal Umbrella insurance.
Progressive's Personal Umbrella insurance covers you and your family by paying claims that exceed the liability limits of your existing auto or homeowners policy. With Personal Umbrella coverage, your home is safe. Your lifestyle is safe. You're safe.

Who Needs Personal Umbrella Coverage?

Progressive's Personal Umbrella insurance isn't just for the wealthy. It's for everyone. That's why we offer comprehensive and affordable protection.
If you drive a motor vehicle or you own a home or condominium, you're vulnerable to legal action and large judgments. If you have an ATV, RV, boat, or motorcycle, your need for extra protection is even more important.

Stay in Control — Even if You Can't Control Events

Your lifestyle is precious. Your family's security is essential. And, less than $1 a day can protect the comforts and the people you hold dear.*

Fire Insurance

As noted above, fire risks are not always insured by homeowner’s policies. It may be that after a thorough review of your homeowner’s insurance, fire is treated by that insurer as a separate and distinct risk all its own. While it is not unheard of to go without fire insurance, many have opted to go this route and wound up regretting it when tragedy ensued. In some areas of the country, fire insurance is more essential than others – for instance, the chronically dry and hot regions of the southwest. Those living in remote or rurual areas are also presumably at higher risk, since firefighters will have a more difficult time dispatching help to such places.

Homeowner’s Insurance

Whether you own or rent your living space, insurance on the structure and your belongings is essential. Homeowner’s insurance is a somewhat vague label encompassing various types of specific risks such as flood, fire and earthquake (although these are not always included) and more often, vandalism and theft. To the extent that your home and the belongings you store in it are more valuable to you than the cost of a homeowner’s insurance premium, you should have such a policy. Ditto for renters, who can and often should purchase renter’s insurance on the belongings stored in their apartments. At a minimum, you can expect homeowner’s insurance and renter’s insurance policies to protect you against harm done to your living space by others. Clearly, where you live also influences how urgent the need for these types of policies are. Those living in known high crime areas, for instance, would be downright foolish not to have a good insurance policy on their homes.

Health Insurance

Contrary to general assumptions, health insurance was not always a must-have in America. As recently as fifty years ago, it was quite common to be uninsured for all but the most catastrophic medical expenses. But times have changed, and some form of health insurance is in many respects a necessity today. As the costs of everything from doctors visits to prescription drugs has steadily risen, it is increasingly difficult for people to pay most medical expenses out of pocket. The most common solution is usually a policy offered through your employer. However, there are other ways of becoming insured, including buying an individual policy (though this is often pricey), buying insurance as part of a group, or using a Health Savings Account to buy a high-deductible policy that covers only major issues like extended hospital stays or surgeries. The older and/or less healthy you are, the more important it is to be insured. Liability insurance is crucial for anyone operating a business that exposes others to risk. Doctors, for instance, are required to purchase malpractice insurance to protect against lawsuits stemming from mistakes or wrongdoing in their work. Construction companies buy liability insurance as well, to protect against workplace accidents involving their employees. The general principle is that if your business entails the possibility of others being harmed, you are obligated either by law or rationality to buy some form of liability insurance. Unfortunately, liability insurance is often quite expensive. Doctors frequently cite the prohibitively high cost of malpractice insurance as a reason they go out of business.

Flood Insurance

Flood insurance, too, is sometimes but not always included under the umbrella of homeowner’s insurance. If you already have a homeowner’s policy, it is important to review it and determine whether floods are excluded from coverage. Unless flood damage is explicitly mentioned, the insurance company will not pay a dime for damages suffered in connection with flooding in your home. The potential damages from floods run the gamut from mild annoyances like vaccuming out the basement and replacing some moldy carpet to outright disasters like your home being torn off its foundation. Some areas of the country (such as coastal regions) are officially recognized as high-flood areas where residents are required to buy flood insurance as a condition of buying property. Even in areas where flood insurance is not required, you should conduct your own analysis and decide whether it’d be smart to buy a policy anyway.

Earthquake Insurance

The world has seen its fair share of devastating earthquakes in recent years, which has driven greater awareness of the need for earthquake insurance. Like flood and fire insurance, earthquake insurance is sometimes but not always included in homeowner’s insurance policies. Unless a homeowner’s policy explicitly provides for earthquake damage, it will not pay out a dime for it. And just as there are particularly fire-prone and flood-prone areas, there are earthquake-prone areas. California comes to mind as the obvious example, but it is far from the only example. If you live in such an area, earthquake insurance is typically required as a condition of buying a home. But even if it isn’t, you ought to do your own homework and decide whether it might make sense to buy one anyway. Earthquake insurance could mean the difference between getting a fresh start and hopelessly losing everything.

Title Insurance

Title insurance comes into play during real estate transactions and exists to guarantee that the title to a given property is, in fact, valid and marketable title free and clear of liens, judgments or encumbrances. The danger is that a prospective home owner or real estate investor will pour weeks or months of time (to say nothing of the purchase price) into buying a property, only to find out that they do not actually have clear ownership of it when the deal goes through. The resulting legal battles involved in unwittingly buying a property with liens or judgments can be extremely problematic. Title insurance protects prospective buyers or investors from inheriting any such problems with the property they are buying.

Even though your underlying policies may provide substantial liability limits, it is not uncommon today for juries to award damages that exceed those limits.
Coverage amounts are written in increments of $1 million and supplement your present policies to provide additional personal liability protection.

Flood Insurance Coverage

One of the most important ways to prepare for a flood is to buy flood insurance coverage.

Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. State Farm®’s homeowner policies do not provide coverage for flood.

If your community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, you can buy a flood insurance policy through your agent.
Most flood insurance is written through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
State Farm agents enrolled in the NFIP Direct Program are able to write and service flood insurance coverage directly through the federal government program, NFIP Direct.
A flood insurance policy normally takes 30 days from the date of purchase to go into effect. So, don't wait until a flood is imminent to buy a policy.
For more information about the NFIP and flood insurance, contact your State Farm agent.
The National Flood Insurance Program is only available in the United States.

Your automobiles/recreational vehicles

If you carry comprehensive coverage (optional) on your automobile/recreational vehicle policy, then the direct, sudden damage to your vehicle resulting from a tsunami would be covered under the terms of most policies.

  • General Liability Insurance

  • Buildings Insurance
  • Loss of Income Insurance
  • Identity Theft Insurance
  • Valuable Papers Coverage
  • Worker’s Compensation
  • Commercial Vehicle Insurance
Now you can get store insurance, with general liability insurance and other coverages through the Progressive Commercial Advantage program. The program offers Business Owners insurance (or BOPs), Workers' Compensation insurance and commercial vehicle insurance to small businesses that qualify.

General Liability Insurance

General liability insurance (GL) is coverage that can protect you from a variety of claims including bodily injury, property damage, personal injury and others that can arise from your business operations.
General liability insurance is often combined with property insurance in a Business Owners Policy (BOP), but general liability insurance also is available to many contractors as standalone coverage through the Progressive Commercial AdvantageSM program.

Who Needs General Liability Insurance?

As a contractor or small business owner, you need some form of general liability insurance to safeguard your livelihood.
A single accident could result in a lawsuit that you might not be able to handle. A great way to protect against this type of situation is to make sure you carry enough general liability insurance.
Some employers might also require you to carry a certain amount of general liability insurance before you can work for them.

General Liability Insurance for Contractors

If you’re a contractor, we understand you might only need general liability insurance - not a BOP. For example, you might not own any commercial buildings that require property insurance, or need to cover payroll or other operating expenses. However, you’re still exposed to liability risks in your job.
You might be eligible to get general liability insurance, without the extra coverages in a BOP, through the Progressive Commercial Advantage program. We offer general liability insurance, as well as *Blanket Additional Insured Coverage to contractors who qualify.
*Blanket Additional Insured Coverage extends your existing liability insurance to other entities as required by some contracts with employers.

General Liability Insurance in a BOP

General liability insurance, along with other various protections, is available in BOPs written through the Progressive Commercial Advantage program.
If you need to protect things like personal property, or commercial buildings such as garages or storage facilities, you might require the additional protections provided in a BOP. Use the form above to find out if you’re eligible to take advantage of the program today.
